Chin Wan Insights / Conveyor maintenance
A belt conveyor maintenance checklist helps a factory record equipment condition, spot recurring problems and prepare a clear maintenance enquiry. Start with the manufacturer’s instructions and your site’s approved safety procedures. The checklist below is a planning aid, not a repair procedure or a substitute for a competent person’s assessment.
Start with Safe Access
Cleaning, clearing a blockage, removing guards and making adjustments must only be carried out by authorised personnel under the site’s isolation and lockout procedure. Stop the equipment, isolate relevant energy sources and address stored energy and connected machinery before intervention. An emergency-stop button is not a substitute for safe isolation. Never reach into a moving conveyor.
What Should You Record?
Give each conveyor an equipment reference. Record its location, belt type, dimensions, normal product, operating schedule and the date of the last service. Keep photographs of identified defects and previous maintenance records. These details help distinguish a new issue from one that keeps returning.

Belt Surface, Edges and Joint
During an approved shutdown, look for visible cuts, fraying, damaged joints, contamination and uneven wear. Note where the damage occurs. A repeated mark near a transfer point may need a review of product handling or adjacent equipment, not simply a replacement belt.

Tracking and Product Movement
Record any reported belt drift, slipping, unstable product movement or contact with the frame. Note whether the issue occurs with an empty conveyor, a particular product or a change in loading. Do not prescribe extra belt tension as a general solution: tracking and tension need assessment against the equipment instructions.
Rollers, Pulleys and Supports
Ask authorised maintenance staff to check component condition, contamination, alignment and fastening during safe access. Log unusual noise, vibration or wear for investigation. Do not remove guards or touch components to investigate a conveyor while it is running.
Guides and Transfer Points
Record cartons catching, products tipping, damaged guides and gaps between conveyors or machines. Include the smallest product being handled and photographs of the transfer arrangement taken safely. Changes to product size can expose a problem that was not present with the original product.
Controls and Safeguards
Have competent personnel check guards, emergency stops, sensors and other safeguards according to the site’s approved inspection programme. Report damaged devices or unexpected behaviour. Electrical testing, changes to PLC logic and safety-system work require appropriately qualified personnel.
How Often Should Maintenance Be Done?
There is no single interval suitable for every belt conveyor. Follow the manufacturer’s schedule and adjust the inspection plan through a competent assessment of operating hours, loading, cleaning conditions and past faults. An intensive packaging line and an occasionally used transfer conveyor may need different plans.
Repair, Replace the Belt or Review the Layout?
A damaged belt may require replacement, but recurring damage deserves a wider review. Check whether the product, loading method, operating conditions or machine connection has changed. Discuss the underlying issue before selecting a replacement specification.

Prepare a Useful Maintenance Enquiry
- Conveyor location and equipment reference
- Current belt width, length and material, if known
- Product dimensions, weight and handling requirements
- Fault symptoms and when they occur
- Safe photographs of the belt, transfer points and layout
- Previous repairs or recent process changes
- Available shutdown window and site access requirements
